Salary ranges

Here’s a simple thing you can do to help all of us succeed:

When a recruiter contacts you about a position — whether it’s one you’re interested in or not, whether you’re looking or not — check to see if they’ve listed the salary range.

If they have not, reply back “What’s the salary range?”

If they reply that they don’t provide ranges, tell them you’re not interested then (unless, of course, you are, I’m not here to tell you not to take the job — I do consider it a warning flag about the company) and point them to Salary Ranges Should Be Listed On Job Descriptions And Worker Compensation Disclosed For All To See (or your favorite similar article).

If they reply with a range, thank them and then deal with the position post however you see fit.

When we all work together to make it obvious that salary transparency is not only good for workers but expected, we’ll change the industry. And when we change the industry to be more equitable to all employees, all employees benefit.
